Know this · 30 seconds

NC rules, short version

1

No license, no registration, no insurance needed. It's legally a bicycle.

2

Keep it in 20 mph mode. Unlocking 28 mph makes it a "moped" under NC law until Dec 1, 2026 (then it's Class 3 — but many greenways still restrict it).

3

Raleigh greenways welcome e-bikes at ≤20 mph. Even the police patrol on them.

4

Helmet: required under 16. Smart for everyone at 20 mph.

One trap: rules change by land manager. Durham bans e-bikes on its greenways; state forests vary. In Raleigh & Knightdale & Wake Forest greenways, you're good.
